Celebrating School Lunch Heroes

Today is School Lunch Hero day, and we want to express our gratitude for all of the school nutrition professionals in our community who work hard every day to nourish our students through school breakfast and lunch programs. We appreciate their commitment and look forward to our shared work moving forward together as Community Roots School Food Services Agency! Today we’re shining a spotlight on a School Lunch Hero who has a track record of providing students with the fuel they need to thrive at school.

Meet Theresa Ruiz, the dedicated Director of Nutritional Services at Nevada Joint Union High School District. With 27 years of experience in school nutrition, Theresa manages the school breakfast and lunch programs for high school students at Nevada Union, Bear River, Ghidotti, and Silver Springs high schools, in addition to vending meals to Nevada City School District and Chicago Park School. She’s proud to lead her team of food service professionals who make it their everyday mission to bring creative, appealing, fresh new food choices to students. Their goal is to provide our students with meals they love that they are proud to serve. Theresa sees school food as an opportunity to have a long-term effect on the health of our students: “If kids start out eating healthy foods, they develop good habits that turn them into healthy adults.”

Community Roots is thrilled to share that Theresa will be joining our team next school year as the Director of Food Services! Her wealth of knowledge and experience will be critical to our success as we move forward toward our shared vision of feeding students with the highest quality of scratch-cooked, locally-sourced school meals.

Thank you, Theresa, for your many years of service as a School Lunch Hero!
