We’re starting off the school year strong with our first ever Harvest of the Month: melons! These tasty summer treats were a hit this week with students both in the classroom and- new this year- on the salad bar. Not just your everyday watermelon, there were four different possibilities for kids to try: Crenshaw, Galia, Cantaloupe, and Piel de Sapo. Each with their own unique flavor and story- all a delicious and refreshing way to celebrate the end of summer.
The melons were grown right here in Penn Valley at Feeding Crane Farm, a family farm growing a wide array of certified organic fruits and vegetables. They strive to grow produce in ways that maximize nutrition while improving the health of the ecosystem and providing a secure livelihood for the farm team. You can find Feeding Crane produce here in our community at the Nevada City Farmers Market, Briar Patch Food Coop, and local restaurants.
In addition to tasting, students get to learn about the history, science, and nutrition behind each Harvest of the Month item. For example, did you know that melons have been around for more than 4,000 years and were depicted in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics? Or that botanically, a melon is a kind of berry?
