Have you ever seen a fruit that looks like a regular kiwi on the outside but has a bright red surprise inside? Say hello to red kiwi! Students across our community are getting several chances to meet this fun and unexpected variety, starting with classroom tastings through Sierra Harvest’s Harvest of the Month program last week. This week the red kiwi showed up in the cafeteria for another opportunity to try and enjoy these flavorful beauties.
Red kiwi tastes similar to green kiwi but slightly sweeter and with a berry flavor. And red kiwis aren’t just tasty—they’re packed with good stuff your body needs. Each one has more vitamin C than an orange which provides your immune system a boost, and is a good source of fiber to keep you full and energized. The red color comes from antioxidants called anthocyanins, the same healthy ingredients found in raspberries and blueberries.
Demonstrating our shared commitment to local sourcing, both Sierra Harvest and Community Roots purchased our red kiwi from Wild River Fruit, a third-generation family farm near Marysville focused on quality, nutrition, and sustainability. Learn more at www.wildriverfruit.com.
