Introducing our New Program: Harvest of the Month

We are excited to launch a new program this year: Harvest of the Month! This classic Farm to School activity introduces students to an in-season fruit or vegetable each month to encourage exploration and healthy eating. In Western Nevada County the program has also focused on sourcing the Harvest of the Month as locally as possible, to introduce students to our rich agricultural heritage and unique ability to know the farmer literally just down the road.

Formerly conducted at the classroom level by Sierra Harvest, this year they are passing the torch to Community Roots to keep this community gem going, and we are eager to build on past success while also taking it to the next level. For example, we will be expanding the range of fruits and vegetables featured given our ability to slice larger produce into sample sized tastes. And new this year: in addition to classroom tastings students will find Harvest of the Month produce in the cafeteria- on the salad bar, as part of a menu item, or both!

Stay tuned to learn more each month about the delicious, local, in-season fruit or vegetable students across our community are exploring!
